East Bay Pictures is Making a Documentary About Urban Farming in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Video by East Bay Pictures. Carl’s Urban Power Team got together to annihilate some concrete in front of his house and plant a food garden there instead. See the HD High Definition version here.

“The film is slated for an early 2009 release, most likely the end of March. We have visited (or will be visiting) dozens of sites in the Bay area – including MyFarm, Slow Food Nation (and their urban garden in front of San Francisco’s city hall), City Slickers Farms, Green Faerie Farm, Alemany Farm, The Edible Schoolyard, the San Quention Prison gardening program, and many others – ranging from people breaking up the concrete in front of their house and planting food to a 5 acre community garden in an poor urban housing development.” Bret Turner

A production blog for the film can be found here.

Organic Foods: Backyard Agriculture

Another excellent film by Rebecca Gerendasy!

“A simple idea led two women into a thriving new farming enterprise. Build backyard mini-farms for homeowners who want to start growing their own fresh herbs and vegetables lasting throughout most of the year. As mentioned in the Director’s Journal, a considerable amount of food can be grown in a small area of land. As food prices rise, these types of mini-farms take on new economic meaning!”

See Rebecca’s Director’s Journal describing this story.

Summer Harvest at The Compost Garden

Sharon Slack, City Farmer’s head gardener, picks fresh vegetables at the Vancouver Compost Demonstration Garden. It’s summer and this is food grown in the city just feet from our back door. That’s what urban agriculture is all about.

Skippy’s Vegetable Garden

“This is a photo journal of my small home vegetable garden. Skippy thinks it’s his garden, but I’ve been gardening here for 20 years. We’re located near Boston, in Eastern Massachusetts, USA (USDA zone 6a). My home garden space is quite small (250 sq ft) and very shady. My challenge is to squeeze in and extend the season as much as I can. This spring, I got a sunny community garden plot assignment! An extra 350 sq ft! I wonder what great veggies I can grow this year?”

The Commons and Urban Agriculture

August 21 2008

Prior to the industrial revolution every village town and city had a commons for food production and marketing. In the 21st century the commons is regaining popularity and applications. My personal experience of the spatial commons is the Boston Common and Garden, a both glorious and cordial public space. My second is the Calcutta Maidan, from Hooghly River to the New Market. It incorporates fishing, goat grazing, horse racing, religious festivals and much more.
