Ryerson University Course Series in Urban Agriculture 2010-2011

Ryerson University has approved four urban agriculture courses that it developed as an official “course series”

In order to help students develop their skills and capacity to address global problems, specifically those related to the current global food crisis and climate change, an urban agriculture course series has been developed as part of the elective offerings of The Chang School’s Certificate in Food Security. The series will consist of four courses and students who complete them will receive official acknowledgement from the University of having achieved completion.

The Brooklyn Ink is devoted to news and features from the borough of Kings. The staff of the Ink, composed entirely of students at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism , works tirelessly to bring you breaking news, multimedia and longer features five days a week.

Excerpt:

Standing over her garden, Joyce Dixon leaned down to weed the soil, tending to her patch of young tomato plants. The summer air was thick and sticky with 90-degree heat. Dixon stood up to wipe the dark skin of her brow, she shook the dirt off her t-shirt and gave a smile.

“I grew up on a farm as a little one,” she said, “and this brings me back.”

Dixon’s farm was on the island of Jamaica, but now it is in the East New York section of Brooklyn. She’s 65 years old and is a volunteer gardener at East New York Farms!, which is a program of the United Community Center. On Saturdays, she tends her patch at the youth farm behind the center, where interns help volunteer gardeners.

Betty Graham hired Chad Kile, left, and Rod Olson’s firm Leaf & Lyre Urban Farms to convert her yard into a food-producing garden. The company, one of several tapping into Calgarians’ desire to make their yards more productive, sells 85 per cent of the produce, while Graham keeps the rest.

Michelle Avis opens her cupped hands. In her outstretched arms are a bunch of ripe, red strawberries. Popping one in my mouth, I bite down. The burst of sweetness makes my mouth water.

This is Avis’s answer to the question of why anyone would want to carve out their lawn in favour of a food-producing garden. We are standing in a “food forest” of berry bushes, radishes and fruit trees that Avis and her husband Rob have planted in their Forest Lawn front yard. My tastebuds urge me to rush home and plant my own food forest.

At 4-1/2 acres, one of the largest urban farms in the country in Cleveland


Just blocks from downtown Cleveland is Ohio City Farm, which was established in July. At 4-1/2 acres, it is one of the largest urban farms in the country. See video coverage after minute 6 of the episode here.

At Ohio City Farm, the total farmable space is about 4-1/2 acres. Since the nonprofit group Refugee Response is licensed 1-1/2 acres and Great Lakes Brewing Company is licensed another acre, Wobser says there are two 1-acre sites left.

“We are in talks with two other groups, one being a young entrepreneur named Central Roots to take an acre on the site,” Wobser explains. “We’re also in talks with the Cuyahoga County Department of Developmental Disabilities, which has a unique program where it works with developmentally disabled individuals and trains them to work on farms.”
