Urban farmers anxious about Lantzville council’s approach

Supporters of urban agriculture in Lantzville are growing concerned the district’s approach to a zoning issue won’t solve the problem.

On Monday, the District of Lantzville hosts a public hearing to consider temporary use permits for all zones, which would permit activities not otherwise allowed under current zoning laws.

The issue was sparked last fall after the owners of Compassion Farm, Dirk Becker and Nicole Shaw, were given a cease and desist order to stop farming on their property, which is zoned residential after a neighbour complained.

Becker and Shaw are well-known advocates of local food and sell their products at farmers’ markets.
