Eli Cayer, a Mainer, is a Portland based entrepreneur whose position of connecting communities and encouraging creative sustainable living sits at the heart of this environment. A few months ago Cayer took on an all but abandoned single-story warehouse in the East Bayside neighborhood with the vision of reusing it as the Urban Farm Fermentory.

Although the farm has replaced Paul Quinn’s football field, the goalposts, stadium lights, and bleachers remain as a reminder of the history of the site. You could look across the seemingly barren field and imagine the seeds slowly stretching their roots deep into the rich soil. Once harvest season arrives, Paul Quinn and its supporters will once again reap the fruit (and vegetables) of their labor.

Enact policies to strengthen urban food production programs, such as assisting gardeners/ farmers to access land in urban areas; providing education on small scale food production such as gardening, agriculture, and animal husbandry; linking gardeners/ farmers to appropriate resources and equipment, re- searching small-scale food production, etc.
