Urban Adamah and urban organic farming

The Urban Adamah farm will be located on a parcel of land at 1050 Parker Street in Berkeley, CA.

The Jewish Sustainability Corps – educational center in Berkeley, California

Urban Adamah is a three-month residential leadership-training program for young adults that integrates urban organic farming, social justice work and progressive Jewish living and learning. Fellows operate an organic farm and educational center in Berkeley, CA, while interning with community-based social justice organizations addressing issues at the intersection of poverty, food security and environmental stewardship. The Urban Adamah curriculum is designed to equip fellows with the tools to become agents of positive change in their own lives and in their communities.

Twelve Urban Adamah fellows will be selected to participate in the inaugural three-month pilot program starting in June, 2011.

The Farm

The Urban Adamah farm will be located on a parcel of land at 1050 Parker Street in Berkeley, CA. The farm will produce a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and include two greenhouses, chickens, bees, and several teaching tents.

Most of the farm’s produce will be delivered to local food banks and soup kitchens. The remaining produce will be consumed by the fellows and/or sold at farmer’s markets in low-income east bay communities. A small percentage will be given as special gifts to funders of the program. Construction of the farm will begin in the spring of 2011 by local community members and will be completed by the inaugural fellowship class in the summer.

The Urban Adamah farm will be an educational center for Bay Area students and community members. Visitors will be invited to participate in specific educational programs, volunteer work-days and special holiday programs. We anticipate over 5,000 visitors annually.

The Urban Adamah farm is designed for portability. All structures including the greenhouses and planting boxes will be easily deconstructable and transportable. Our site on Parker Street has been donated by Wareham Development LLC at least through the 2012 season. In 2013, Urban Adamah likely will need to find a new home.
