The High School for Public Service Youth Farm is offering an Urban Farmer Training Program in Brooklyn for the 2012 season.


A partnership between the school, Green Guerillas and BK Farmyards

Based at the Youth Farm, the program will offer participants the chance to learn the most efficient farming techniques, study direct marketing of fresh food, and work side-by-side with youth farmers and food advocates. The program is ideal for recent college graduates, adults wanting a career change, gardeners looking to develop professional farming skills, and anyone interested in sustainable urban agriculture.

The Basics

Full Season Farm Training program: 30 weeks, April-November OR

Summer Season Farm Training program: 20 weeks, June- October

20 hours per week on Mondays, Wednesdays & Friday

Serious hands-on farm work at the Youth Farm, a 1-acre farm at the High

School for Public Service in Crown Heights, Brooklyn

Technical Workshops – one per week, covering topics from soil health to integrated pest management to food justice

Focused Rotations in Propagation, Cut Flowers, Marketing and more

NYC C.R.A.F.T. – opportunities to visit and learn from other city farmers

Tuition for the training program is $2,100 for the full season (30 weeks) and $1,400 for the summer only (20 weeks). This fee ensures the sustainability of the training program, and a percentage of the fee goes towards the farm’s community involvement work. Payment can be made in multiple installments.
