The city’s largest housing project will soon boast one of the city’s largest farms, a place which will not only provide fresh produce to residents of the sprawling Red Hook Houses apartment complex in Brooklyn but also jobs for young residents.

On Tuesday afternoon, New York City Housing Authority Chairman John Rhea and Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs will sink the first shovels into the soil at the 1-acre farm where fresh herbs, tomatoes, strawberries and of course kale (this is Brooklyn, after all) have been planted. Soon, 34 local teens will follow behind them, tending the fields of what used to be an empty lawn in the 39-acre complex.
