Bergen is the second largest city in Norway after Oslo, the capital, where people often grow their own food on rooftops and in community gardens. The Oslo area is famous for its kolonihager, literally “colony farms,” which are community farms that were established in the early 20th century. Over time, people have built little cabins on their kolonihager parcels, and they defend their rights to their parcels as property. Parsellhager gardens, as the garden parcels are called, are slightly different in that the parcel users are not allowed to construct any buildings, and the land use terms are not as fixed, since the municipality can take back the parsellhager land at any time.

After a decade dabbling in growing hydroponic produce, Yancy, with his new bride, Valda, decided to open the store last year in the former Honey-Krust Bakery on Johnson City’s Cherry Street, where they sell products for hydroponic and organic growing.

In an attempt to tackle food insecurity within its boundaries, Windhoek plans to turn the many scattered riverbeds where criminals often hide into gardens to produce food for the needy.
Produce from such gardens will be availed to the city’s poor who find themselves at the receiving end of starvation.
The informal settlement population in Windhoek is growing at the rate of between 4 and 5 percent per year. The majority of this population are poor.

To Kay and Sue and other gardeners, Fruit Loop Acres is a beautiful labor of love that should be allowed to grow. To others, it’s an ugly mess, a tangle of untamed greenery interspersed with smelly animals, that should be shut down.
Who is right? It’s hard to say, and the city’s laws are largely silent.

Meredith Sheperd, owner of Love & Carrots, has expanded her business that helps residents launch and maintain edible urban gardens in the District since we last wrote about her. She now has nine full-time employees and some apprentices tending to some 85 food gardens of varying sizes in and around the city.
That’s not counting the garden owners who have “graduated” from the program and are now maintaining their own, which would add up to nearly 200. Sheperd has decided to cap the number of gardens her crew can maintain at a given time at 100 this year, to keep the logistics more manageable.

The idea is simple. Jenkins, a certified master gardener, wants to establish a nonprofit urban farm on 0.75 acres of the grounds of the former Chicora Elementary School on Success Street. In Yarmouk (in Damascus), the activist said that people mostly grow cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplant and zucchini, but even then people do not have enough to eat, and there is no bread – wheat being too difficult to grow, and requiring machines which in turn rely on fuel, a scarcity, and lots of open space.
But, Hevi said, the ability to produce one’s own food was important for people in these areas. While the U.N. occasionally delivers food baskets to the area, which they refer to as “food security,” being able to grow one’s own food is much more sustainable and offers “food sovereignty.”
Growing one’s own food “makes sense on so many levels,” said Hevi, who is German-Iraqi. “You can produce your own food, and you can also sell it, so you can refinance some of the project.”

Spokane’s new urban farming ordinance that allows for the keeping of small farm animals is likely to cost the city extra money for animal control services.
The director of the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service has outlined a series of charges for the extra work of answering farm animal welfare calls and noise and odor complaints involving goats, sheep, small pigs or fowl.

Petersburg residents will have access to an array of peppers, tomatoes and other vegetables. Fresh tilapia will also be grown with the help of indoor aquaponic units. Aquaponics involves raising fish and plants together. The fish waste becomes plant fertilizer and the water is filtered by the plants. Vegetables will be grown via hydroponics, in which plants are grown without soil in water, with additional nutrients.
The hydroponic and aquaponic growing units will be placed in the community center’s gymnasium. Other parts of the building will be used for nutrition classes and community outreach efforts.

The clean lines of paths, patios, fences, raised beds, retaining walls, arbors, trellises and pergolas can all be used to create order out what can sometimes be a chaotic and cluttered plantscape. Fruit trees espaliered along a rigid structure (i.e. wood or wires) or a turning a hillside into a terraced vineyard are examples.
