With life in the city offering little security, applications to farm schools are up as the country suddenly becomes a good place to be.

Katerina Lissoudi spent the last 20 years working as an accountant in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second city. She never expected to live a country life like her farmer husband but when she was made redundant it was to the land she turned. Now she’s making cherry and pepper sauces from her mother-in-law’s recipes and her husband’s produce.

The company that I worked for closed and I had to decide if I was going to stay in home and do the house cleaning or to do something else,” she told me.

Richard Dickinson has lived in East Portland since the 1990’s and saw firsthand the impact of unfettered growth and the city’s neglect. “It dissipated the whole social fabric of the area,” Dickinson said. Because the neighborhoods’ old rural character still remains — larger lots, towering Douglas Firs — Dickinson set out to re-build community through agriculture. He began farming on empty properties near his home, with the owners’ permission, and selling or giving away the bounty at a makeshift farm stand on his street.
