Next year, urban farming will be introduced in People’s Housing Programme (PPR) areas to promote agricultural activities among residents, especially those living on strata properties, says Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar.

He said Lembah Subang Satu PPR had been selected for the urban farming pilot project which was aimed at transforming the lives of PPR residents through residential farming.

“If one PPR area has 300 houses, just imagine the outcome if each house unit growing three chilli plants.

“Even if these urban farmers do not sell their home-grown chillies, they can always plant them for their own consumption,” he told reporters after launching the EzGrow technology at Laman Sayur, Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism International Show 2016 (Maha 2016) here today.

On the EzGrow technology development, he said the technology allowed germination and seedlings to grow in a cube without requiring any pot.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who was also present at the ceremony said the ministry would discuss with Noh’s ministry on having an urban farming competition among Klang Valley parliamentary constituencies next year.

“Before this, urban farming competitions were only held among several areas in Kuala Lumpur, but for next year, we propose to extend it further at the parliamentary constituency level,” he said. — Bernama
