Again, looking at the question from an economic or several stand point, the advantages of a knowledge of horticulture are not to be despised. The lot of many a poor family might have been made smoother had their head have been taught, how properly to cultivate the little plot of land by which their cottage was surrounded.

International Journal of Epidemiology: Eating more fruits and vegetables may prevent millions of premature deaths
“We wanted to investigate how much fruit and vegetables you need to eat to gain the maximum protection against disease, and premature death. Our results suggest that although five portions of fruit and vegetables is good, ten a day is even better.”

This is the finding of new research, led by scientists from Imperial College London, which analysed 95 studies on fruit and vegetable intake.
The team found that although even the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day reduced disease risk, the greatest benefit came from eating 800g a day (roughly equivalent to ten portions – one portion of fruit or vegetables if defined as 80g).

At a mayoral committee meeting yesterday, Trollip said there was a lot of urban farming taking place in the city, bringing with it public health and safety concerns. “This is a matter of considerable concern. We have a lot of urban farming taking place. We’ve got livestock being farmed in the urban area,” he said.
“In Uitenhage, we went to look at the available land.
“There’s an extensive piece of land surrounding Uitenhage for farming purposes. That land is covered in prickly pear and other invader species.
