India: Convent School Sets Up Rooftop Farm

Trying to motivate other schools adopt rooftop farming, the school recently organized a workshop for teachers of 50 schools.

It has been a month since the farm was inaugurated and the roof already looks green. The school has also been organizing various activities like container designing; making containers out of waste, to motivate students to get into farming. The plants are also gifted to teachers on their birthdays.

They have also made a green wall at the entrance. Here too, saplings have been grown in waste plastic bottles. “We are now planning to cover the entire boundary wall in the same way so the entire wall looks green,” said Preeti.

The Chandigarh environment department too is focusing on rooftop farms. They have roped in Punjab Agricultural University to get it done. “We want that entire Chandigarh should look green and blue when viewed from the sky; blue because of solar panels and green because of rooftop farming,” said Santosh Kumar, director, department of environment and chief conservator, forests.
