Canada: B.C. gardeners dig into yard-sharing

Regular homeowners who want to share their space with non-commercial gardeners can use the Young Agrarians U-Map to offer up their yards, and gardeners can look at the existing land listings.

Both Dykstra and Single-Dain lamented the existence of a dedicated Vancouver website for homeowners and gardeners interested in yard-sharing. Victoria-based LifeCycles Project hosted a yard-sharing website at sharingbackyards.com for several years and had expanded it to 58 cities before the platform collapsed.

“We were running without funding and I tried to write some grant applications while I scaled up,” said former project leader Chris Hawkins. “After the economic collapse it just got harder and harder to get grants, especially as we weren’t regarded as a startup.”

Looking after the Lost Gardens of Totne.

The 150-year-old kitchen garden in the grounds of Totnes’s Kennicott Sixth Form College was once part of a working Victorian estate boasting hothouses growing grapes and nectarines.

Earlier this year a ­garden design day was organised as the first step in regenerating the kitchen garden as an education resource for the community and the school.

The Biology Department at the University of St. Thomas (Saint Paul, MN) invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in urban agriculture. This 100% research position is funded by a National Science Foundation grant for a period of two years, and is a unique opportunity to help develop a new research field. The project focuses on quantifying rates of nutrient recycling and loss from compost application in urban gardens, and includes outreach aimed at reducing urban food insecurity. Duties will include conducting field research and laboratory analyses, supervising teams of undergraduate researchers, analyzing and interpreting data, presenting findings at scientific meetings, and publishing results in refereed journals.
